This year, the tradition of the Weiherer pigeon markets continues. On three dates (Monday, February 3, March 2, and April 6, starting at 6:00 PM), cards will be sold for a good cause at the Kundmüller brewery inn. Starting this year, the proceeds will no longer go toward the renovation of the Weiher chapel but will instead be donated to the "Sternenzelt Bamberg Children's and Youth Hospice.“
The pigeon market tradition was initiated in 2017 by the chapel committee between Viereth and Weiher, together with the owners of the Kundmüller brewery, Roland and Oswald Kundmüller. "The idea had been around for a long time, and when the committee approached us with the chapel project, we were immediately enthusiastic," explains Oswald Kundmüller. Andreas Nüsslein, head of the committee, adds: "Since our main project, the chapel, is completed, but we really wanted to continue the pigeon markets, we looked for a new local project. Now we want to support the construction of the Sternenzelt children's hospice, which is very close to our hearts."
Card drawing for a good cause: In the past, pigeons, pigs, and other animals were auctioned off at local taverns during pigeon markets. Today, the tradition has shifted to final products like homemade cakes, treat baskets, homemade specialties, and, of course, beer for the winners. The rules: 36 cards from a "Fränkisches Blatt" deck are sold to guests for 1 euro each. Once all are sold, a "lucky fairy" draws a card from a new deck. Whoever bought that card in the previous game wins a tasty prize. Accompanied by traditional live tavern music, the pigeon market is a highlight of the event calendar, with the charitable cause adding the finishing touch.
