Strong yet gentle, a full body of malt embraced by just the right portion of hops. That’s the Weiherer Bock - brewed seasonally since 1988. The strong beer is a real star: it has already won seven awards. And here comes medal number eight. The Weiherer Bock wins Gold at the bock beer tasting of the Meininger’s International Craft Beer Award.
“For me, our Bock is just part of us, like foam is part of beer,” says brewmaster and owner Roland Kundmüller about the second variety in the history of Weiherer beer. After the Weiherer Lager, he wrote the recipe for the beer with 16° original wort in the mid-80s, as he remembers: “I really wanted a light, golden Bock that is strong, but not overly sweet. A Bock that delights your palate with a well-balanced freshness which is achieved by adding my favorite Spalter Select hops."
The many awards that the Weiherer Bock has won in recent years show that he has succeeded in doing so. With the new gold medal of the Meininger’s International Craft Beer Award, a tradition almost continues. Already in 2018 the strong beer won a Gold medal there, and in 2019 it even was awarded Platinum.
Along with the first brew of the Weiherer Bock in 1988, the first Weiherer Bockbier tapping was celebrated, which attracts every year numerous fans across the borders of the region to Weiher. Before the Corona pandemic there were even two events - the Maibock tapping and the Bock beer tapping in autumn. Something that owner Oswald Kundmüller is missing a lot. “We are already looking forward to the day when we can celebrate the Bock beer season again with our guests. The scope of this is still not certain yet, but we really hope that it will be that time again in autumn. ”Until then, the Weiherer Bock will also be available in bottles. Meininger‘s International Craft Beer Award was launched in 2014 by Meininger Verlag. Until 2020, the competition took place once a year, up to 1,200 beer specialties from all over the world were blind tasted by almost 100 national and international beer experts.
