To support the people in Ukraine, a movement was started by the local brewing scene, calling on colleagues worldwide to brew a solidarity beer. More than 50 breweries have responded so far, including the Kundmüller brewery.
Following a recipe provided by the "Drinkers for Ukraine" initiative, Roland Kundmüller and his team brewed a top-fermented, dark stout. "Resist," which literally means "to resist," is now available in 0.75-liter bottles and on tap at the Kundmüller brewery-inn, as well as in well-stocked beverage markets. For every bottle sold, 2 euros, and for every glass on tap, 1 euro, will go to the International Red Cross.
"Although we know it's only a small contribution, we absolutely want to help our Ukrainian colleagues and the people there," explains owner Oswald Kundmüller. As a brewery, they have found the right project with this initiative.
The original recipe for the "Ukrainian Anti-Imperial Stout" is inspired by the traditional dish borscht, using beetroot. "However, we had to adapt the recipe since it wouldn't have complied with the German purity law," says Roland Kundmüller.
Nevertheless, beer lovers can enjoy a special brew with "Resist." Using 7 different malts, the stout offers roasted notes of coffee and raw cocoa. The hop varieties used are East Kent Golding, Fuggles, Saphir, and Perle, the latter providing a Franconian twist to the recipe. The brewing team settled on a not-too-strong version with an alcohol content of 5.9%.
Anyone who wants to support Ukraine while enjoying beer can drink "Resist" on-site at the Kundmüller brewery-inn or take home bottles from there or from well-stocked beverage markets.
After many years of planning, construction of the new brewery began on February 9, 2019. The location for the new brewery is 200 meters above the old one, in the upper part of the premises, where canals first had to be laid. 4,000 m³ of earth had to be removed, and a formwork structure for the foundation was gradually built. Then the masons could begin working on the interior, the ceiling, and the first floor. The focus of the first phase was on the raw construction. Check out the image gallery here.
